Surge arresters and composite insulators for medium and high voltage

Experience is most essential when it comes to reliability in medium- and high-voltage applications. Siemens Energy has been designing and manufacturing medium- and high-voltage surge arresters for standard and special applications since 1925, with an outstanding arrester and insulator footprint from two factories in Berlin, Germany and Wuxi, China — a constellation that allows short delivery times and an ideal distribution of competencies.

Valuable equipment such as transformers, arresters, circuit breakers, generators, motors, capacitors, traction vehicles, bushings and complete switchgear is protected against overvoltages. The arresters are designed for a wide range of installation environments, from arctic cold to desert heat and the dampness of tropical climates, and are available for any application from 3 kV up to 1,200 kV — including special applications such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and FACTS systems, as well as all kinds of compensation systems for electric power networks.

Siemens Energy composite insulators combine the highest levels of electrical insulation and mechanical strength in a compact, lightweight one-piece housing design with two different sealing options depending on customer requirements. All insulators are designed and tested in compliance with the latest versions of relevant IEC & ANSI standards.

High-voltage transmission (up to 1,200 kV)

For high-voltage transmission, Siemens Energy offers what the brochure calls the most complete portfolio in the market: arresters for applications up to 1,200 kV, suitable as station and line surge arresters, meeting competitive and high requirements. The families are the 3EL silicone surge arresters with cage design, the 3EQ surge arresters with tube design, and the 3EP porcelain surge arresters.

Medium-voltage distribution (up to 72.5 kV)

The medium-voltage distribution range covers typical applications up to 72.5 kV with outdoor and indoor versions (shedless housing). Product lines: 3EK distribution surge arresters, 3EJ surge arresters for motor and generator protection, and 3EH4 plug-in surge arresters. The family uses a non-explosive disconnector, classified as a non-dangerous good.

Overhead line solutions

Siemens Energy is one of the few suppliers offering insulators and arresters for overhead lines as a complete solution: composite insulators 3FL up to 800 kV, post insulators 3FS and 3FT for indoor and outdoor use, non-gapped line surge arresters (NGLA) and externally gapped line arresters (EGLA), plus innovative line compaction and line uprating concepts.

Surge arresters for GIS & HVDC/FACTS

For gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), arresters cover AC/DC system voltages from 72.5 kV up to 800 kV; a clean air surge arrester is available, and Oil-SF6 surge arresters protect transformers.

For HVDC/FACTS applications, arresters are available for AC/DC voltages up to 1,100 kV, designed for the highest energy requirements and according to the latest standards.

Rolling stock & rail electrification

Rail surge arresters are offered in cage design or tube design with silicone rubber housing, for AC systems up to 25 kV and DC systems up to 3 kV, for travel speeds up to 420 km/h and with a short-circuit current rating of 65 kA.

Sensarrester — 24/7 monitoring

The Sensarrester system provides 24/7 real-time data access to the actual arrester condition and historical data via app or web browser. It includes a live alert function for critical arrester conditions via email or push notification, historical data within a chosen time period, and an event log showing the leakage current curve and the weather conditions at the time of a surge event.
