Start from the system: maximum system voltage Us and the neutral earthing concept set the required rated voltage Ur. The protected equipment and energy duty then select the class — line discharge class 2–5 (or charge classes per IEC 60099-4 Ed. 3) — and the site sets housing and creepage requirements.
