Externally gapped line arrester 3EV4, external series spark gap, transmission-line duty, IEC 60099-8
3EV4
External series spark gap galvanically isolates the metal-oxide active part from line voltage under normal service conditions — no leakage current and no continuous energisation
On a lightning strike the gap flashes over; the arrester limits the ground-fault current from several kA to a few amperes and the arc extinguishes within 10 ms, so no circuit-breaker reclosing operation is needed
No disconnector and no ground lead required; highly compact design suited to multi-circuit towers with very small cross-arm clearances, and better suited for live installation
Series gap insulates the varistor unit, so a lower arrester rated voltage and fewer MO blocks suffice than in a non-gapped (NGLA) design; complete EGLA solutions with polymer insulators are also available
Designed and tested to the latest IEC 60099-8; part of a line-surge-arrester portfolio covering system voltages up to 800 kV with 3.6 C energy discharge capability
Optional Cigré-based line simulation service determines the optimum number and placement of arresters along the line; detailed 3EV4 ratings and dimension drawings available on request
