Brochure · EN — A 4-page Siemens Energy portfolio brochure (© 2021, classification C_Unrestricted) presenting the complete range of surge arresters and composite insulators for medium- and high-voltage applications from 3 kV up to 1,200 kV. It covers high-voltage transmission arresters (3EL, 3EQ, 3EP), medium-voltage distribution arresters (3EK, 3EJ, 3EH4), overhead line solutions (3FL composite insulators up to 800 kV, 3FS/3FT post insulators, NGLA/EGLA line arresters), arresters for GIS and HVDC/FACTS, rail surge arresters, and the Sensarrester 24/7 monitoring system, with manufacturing in Berlin, Germany and Wuxi, China.
Reliability in medium- and high-voltage applications rests on experience: Siemens Energy has designed and manufactured medium- and high-voltage surge arresters for standard and special applications since 1925. Two factories — in Berlin, Germany and Wuxi, China — give the arrester and insulator business an outstanding footprint, enabling short delivery times and a well-balanced distribution of competencies. Valuable equipment such as transformers, arresters, circuit breakers, generators, motors, capacitors, traction vehicles, bushings and complete switchgear is thereby ideally protected against overvoltages.
The arresters are designed for a wide range of installation environments, from arctic cold to desert heat and damp tropical climates, and are available for any application from 3 kV up to 1,200 kV — including special applications such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and FACTS systems as well as all kinds of compensation systems for electric power networks. Continuous research and development, combined with comprehensive worldwide experience, gives these surge arresters a leading edge in overvoltage protection with long service life and reliability.
Siemens Energy composite insulators combine the highest levels of electrical insulation and mechanical strength in a compact, lightweight one-piece housing design, with two different sealing options depending on customer requirements. All insulators are designed and tested in compliance with the latest versions of the relevant IEC and ANSI standards.
Portfolio highlights: development in Germany; worldwide support direct from local Siemens Energy offices and the global center of competence in Berlin; a type-tested portfolio according to IEC and IEEE standards; one of the few suppliers offering insulators and arresters for overhead lines as a complete solution; and the innovative Sensarrester system providing 24/7 real-time access to surge arrester monitoring data with integration into the Sens-family.
For applications up to 1,200 kV, Siemens Energy offers what it describes as the most complete portfolio in the market, suitable for use as both station and line surge arresters and meeting competitive and demanding requirements.
The high-voltage families are the 3EL silicone surge arresters with cage design, the 3EQ surge arresters with tube design, and the 3EP porcelain surge arresters.
Medium-voltage arresters are available in outdoor and indoor versions (shedless housing), with typical applications up to 72.5 kV.
The range comprises 3EK distribution surge arresters, 3EJ surge arresters for motor and generator protection, and 3EH4 plug-in surge arresters, complemented by a non-explosive disconnector that is classified as a non-dangerous good.
For overhead lines the portfolio spans composite insulators 3FL up to 800 kV and post insulators 3FS and 3FT for indoor and outdoor use.
Line surge arresters are offered in non-gapped (NGLA) and externally gapped (EGLA) variants, and the offering extends to innovative line compaction and line uprating solutions.
For gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), arresters cover AC/DC system voltages from 72.5 kV up to 800 kV; a clean-air surge arrester is available, and oil-SF6 surge arresters protect transformers.
For HVDC and FACTS applications, arresters are rated for AC/DC voltages up to 1,100 kV, designed for the highest energy requirements and built according to the latest standards.
Rail surge arresters are available in cage or tube design with silicone rubber housing, for AC systems up to 25 kV and DC systems up to 3 kV.
They are qualified for travel speeds up to 420 km/h and a short-circuit current of 65 kA.
The Sensarrester system provides 24/7 real-time access to actual arrester condition and historical data via app or web browser, with a live alert function for critical arrester conditions delivered by email or push notification.
Historical data can be viewed for any chosen time period, and an event log shows the leakage current curve together with the weather conditions at each surge event.
Surge arresters can be purchased online in the Energy-Shop, where individual surge arresters can be configured and ordered directly after registration at shop.siemens-energy.com/transmission/en.
