Gas-insulated switchgear type 8DN9 — Technical data

Datasheet · EN — Official Siemens Energy technical datasheet (2022) for the 8DN9 gas-insulated switchgear. The 8DN9 covers rated voltages up to 245 kV (offshore variants up to 300 kV) at 50/60 Hz, with busbar and feeder normal currents up to 4000 A, short-circuit breaking current up to 50 kA (interrupted in under 3 cycles) and peak withstand current up to 135 kA. The circuit-breaker uses a stored-energy spring drive, and each gas compartment is type-tested to a leakage rate below 0.1% per year. A bay is 1500 mm wide, 3700 mm x 5100 mm in height/depth (depending on bay arrangement) and weighs 7.5 t, designed for indoor installation across an ambient range of -25 °C to +55 °C. Service intervals are long: first major inspection after more than 25 years and an expected lifetime beyond 50 years, with compliance to IEC, IEEE and GOST standards.

Overview

This datasheet presents the headline technical parameters of the Siemens Energy 8DN9 gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), a high-voltage indoor switchgear family rated up to 245 kV, with variants for offshore applications available up to 300 kV.

The 8DN9 is built for long, low-maintenance service: gas compartments are type-tested to a leakage rate below 0.1% per year, the first major inspection is due only after more than 25 years, and the expected lifetime exceeds 50 years. The switchgear is designed to IEC, IEEE and GOST standards.

The circuit-breaker is operated by a stored-energy spring mechanism and supports the rated operating sequences O-0.3 s-CO-3 min-CO and CO-15 s-CO. Values beyond those listed in the ratings table are available on request.

Bay configuration

The datasheet includes a single-line diagram of a typical 8DN9 bay alongside the ratings table, showing the motor-operated (M) busbar disconnectors on a double-busbar arrangement, the circuit-breaker, feeder disconnector and earthing switches, current and voltage transformers, and the cable/line termination.

Bay dimensions depend on the bay arrangement, with a standard bay width of 1500 mm, height/depth of 3700 mm x 5100 mm and a bay weight of 7.5 t.
