Setting the Bar for Quality and Versatility

Siemens Energy builds Tractronic® on-board traction transformers across every capacity range for rail-based vehicles. Because these products have long lifecycles, the designs prioritize maximum reliability, economic efficiency and safety, and are tailored through parameters such as power rating (frequency, capacity, voltage), dimensions, weight and installation location, dissipation and short-circuit voltages, driving patterns and medium-frequency performance, loss and impedance-voltage characteristics, and material choices for environmental requirements (e.g. ester coolant).

The platform is field-proven in three application classes: locomotive platforms operating worldwide in all climatic conditions for heavy-duty transport; high-speed long-distance rail in Europe, China and Turkey, where safety, availability, reliability and environmental friendliness are paramount; and Electric Multiple Units (EMU) in commuter and suburban networks, designed to run efficiently for decades.

The transformers increase train efficiency and performance, handle maximum ratings in a minimum of space, serve local-content demands, and are supplied to rail operators and train manufacturers worldwide.

Certification, Services and Technical Performance

Siemens Energy holds Q-1 supplier status with Deutsche Bahn AG and is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22163 (IRIS) and welding qualification EN 15085-2. Close cooperation with international standards committees ensures compliance with applicable requirements.

The range covers single-phase and multi-phase transformers for machine rooms, under-floor and low-floor applications, and on-roof installation, in all capacity ranges up to 15 MVA and above on request. Cooling units can be integrated into the transformer frame or supplied as separate components, with a choice of oil, silicone or environmentally friendly ester-based cooling fluids (e.g. MIDEL 7131).

Technical performance: frequencies from 16⅔ to 60 Hz; operating voltages 1.5 kV DC, 3 kV DC, 11.5 kV AC, 15 kV AC, 25 kV AC and other special voltage levels; single- or multi-system versions; integrated smoothing and filter reactors; auxiliary and heating windings per customer specification; traction windings usable as network filter reactors.

A worldwide manufacturing and service network with uniform IRIS-compliant quality standards delivers timely responses to inquiries, short processing times on spare-parts orders, fast on-site service access, and components and services anywhere at any time.

The Right Transformer for Every Application

As part of the traction chain, on-board traction transformers are crucial to train and operator performance. Each Tractronic® type is designed and optimized for a specific train class according to frequency, rating and voltage; required dimensions and weights; loss and impedance-voltage characteristics; operational cycles and frequency-response behavior; and environmental requirements.

The product lines are: ultra-light Thinity® transformers; Tractronic® AC and DC transformers for electric locomotives; Tractronic® AUX transformers for diesel locomotives; and Tractronic® transformers for high-speed, EMU and tram-train applications.

Testing Procedures

Tractronic® traction transformers are tested essentially the same way as power transformers, with routine and type tests in full compliance with IEC 60310.

Routine tests: measurement of winding resistance, voltage ratios, no-load primary current and losses; separate-source and induced voltage withstand tests; measurement of impedance voltages; determination of load losses.

Type tests (per customer requirements): winding resistances, voltage ratios, no-load primary current and losses; lightning-impulse, separate-source and induced voltage withstand tests; impedance voltages; total and load losses; temperature-rise test; cooling-unit power consumption; oil-gas analysis according to IEC 1181.

Special tests: magnetic-field-strength measurement at different distances from the tank wall in three orthogonal directions; noise measurements; partial-discharge measurement; mathematical proofs of sudden short-circuit resistance (with optional testing in an accredited third-party laboratory); shock and vibration tests.
