Datasheet · EN — Siemens Energy datasheet (2021) for the SPS2S 245 kV high-voltage dead tank circuit breaker family, covering standard features, application-based customizations, full ratings for the SPS2S-245 and SPS2-245 types, supplementary specifications, and dimensioned outline drawings including the 90 kA IPC variant.
The SPS2S 245 kV dead tank family is built on the same core technology as the rest of the SPS2 portfolio: the proven FA spring-spring operating mechanism paired with the 3AP arc assist interrupter.
Since the platform's 1997 release, more than 46,000 SPS2 circuit breakers have gone into the US market alone, out of over 160,000 breakers Siemens Energy has delivered worldwide.
No TRV capacitors are necessary for breakers rated up to 63 kA, and both 2- and 3-cycle interrupting time options are available.
Each breaker ships fully assembled and factory tested, requiring no in-field adjustments and virtually no maintenance.
Available options include independent pole operation (IPO) with a phase synchronizing device (PSD) for reliable point-on-wave switching, high seismic designs per IEEE 693, tank heaters for operation down to -50 °C, and composite bushings.
For further application-specific customizations, Siemens Energy directs customers to their local representative.
The ratings table covers the two 245 kV dead tank types: the standard SPS2S-245 (up to 63 kA) and the SPS2-245 (up to 90 kA). Values are reproduced exactly as printed in the 2021 datasheet, page 2.
| Type | Related max kV | Rated continuous current (A, rms) | Rated short circuit current at rated (kA) | Interrupting time (cycles) | Lightning impulse withstand voltage BIL, (kV) | Chopped wave, 2µs (kA) | Closing and latching capability (kA) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPS2S-245 | 245 | up to 4000 | up to 63 | 2 or 3 | Up to 1050 | 1160 | up to 170 |
| SPS2-245 | 245 | up to 4000 | up to 90 | 2 or 3 | Up to 1050 | 1160 | up to 234 |
Standard and custom values for operating environment, duty cycle, weights, seismic and switching classes, and control voltages, exactly as printed on page 2. A dash (–) indicates no custom option is listed.

Page 3 provides dimensioned outline drawings (front and side elevations, inches with millimeters in brackets) for the SPS2-245 and for the SPS2-245 90 kA IPC variant. Key overall figures common to both drawings: 173.8 in [4835] shipping and installed length, 135.8 in [3841] shipping height, 188.0 in [5303] overall height, 98.2 in [2642] shipping and installed width, and 21.9 in [407] live part to ground.
The drawings also locate the lifting lugs (2 places each side of frame), ground pads ((2) .500-13UNC holes on 1.75 [44.5] centers), density monitor, padlockable handle, current transformers (when required), rupture disc, lift-off door with locking handle, external pull-to-trip handle (when required), and the operations counter and position indicator window. The 90 kA IPC variant differs mainly in its per-phase mechanism cabinets — the side elevation shows a 49.2 in [1250] cabinet height and a 122.8 in [3118] overall width across the cabinets — versus the standard breaker's single 47.0 in [1193] cabinet.
