Brochure · EN — Nine-slide 2025 Siemens Energy Grid Technologies product presentation introducing the 8VM3 Blue GIS, a compact gas-insulated switchgear up to 72.5 kV that combines vacuum interrupting technology with clean-air insulation for zero-carbon insulation. Presented as a world premiere in Anaheim, CA, the deck positions the 8VM3 as the most compact Blue GIS, rated up to 72.5 kV / 50 kA, with an enhanced module kit based on the long-proven 8DN8 GIS platform offering higher performance at the same footprint. It covers two specified configurations — a switchgear bay with conventional instrument transformer (up to 3,000 A / 50 kA) and the prefabricated 'Blue power pack' ring main unit with up to three bays (up to 1,250 A / 31 kA) for wind turbine generators — each with a full technical data table and a labeled bay-layout diagram, and closes with a clean-air-busbar pilot deployment on two offshore wind platforms in Denmark.
The presentation introduces the 8VM3 Blue GIS up to 72.5 kV under the tagline 'Vacuum interrupting technology and clean air insulation for zero carbon insulation'.
The opening slide announces the 8VM3 Blue GIS as a world premiere, presented in Anaheim, CA, with factory photos of the first units.
Perfect in size and performance for versatile applications and switchgear arrangements, the 8VM3 Blue GIS enhanced module kit provides solutions for a wide range of requirements and conditions, single line schemes, electrical performance and space limitations.
The 8VM3 Blue GIS design is based on the long-time proven 8DN8 GIS platform, offering higher performance at the same footprint. Technical data as printed on the slide:

The 72.5 kV / 50 kA switchgear bay is shown with a labeled cutaway and matching single-line diagram. Ten components are identified: (1) integrated local control cubicle; (2) circuit-breaker with vacuum interrupter; (3) spring-stored-energy operating mechanism with circuit-breaker control unit (common drive); (4) busbar I with disconnector and earthing switch; (5) busbar II with disconnector and earthing switch; (6) current transformer; (7) outgoing module with disconnector and earthing switch; (8) voltage transformer; (9) make-proof earthing switch (high speed); (10) cable connection module.
The 8VM3 Blue GIS advanced design allows for the delivery of a pre-assembled, tested, and 'ready to connect' two or three bays RMU (ring main unit), significantly reducing on-site installation work.
The Blue power pack includes the 8VM3 Blue GIS mounted on a base frame and an LCC with the required protection, automation and supervision — all wired and factory tested. It is presented as an ideal solution for wind turbine generators.
Technical data as printed on the slide (fidelity note: the short-time withstand current is printed 'up to 31 kA, 3 s' and the ambient range '-30 °C up to +50 °C' in this presentation):

The RMU layout slide labels seven components on the cutaway and single-line diagram: (1) local control cubicle; (2) circuit-breaker with vacuum interrupter; (3) spring-stored-energy operating mechanism with circuit-breaker control unit (common drive); (4) busbar with disconnector and earthing switch; (5) Voltage Detection and Indication System (VDIS); (6) outer-cone cable connection compartment; (7) current transformer (window type in cable connection compartment).
The example configuration shown consists of a disconnector bay (DC) and two circuit breaker bays (CB). Announced as coming soon: low power instrument transformer (LPIT) integrated in a partition or in the cable bushings.
The presentation documents a pilot project for clean-air insulation with a European utility (customer and project names withheld per catalog guardrail): 72.5 kV 8DN8 switchgear with busbar in clean air, installed on two offshore wind platforms in Denmark. The switchgear was manufactured and delivered by Siemens Energy in 2020 and energized in 2023 and 2024.
